The RM50 million national allocation for Tamil schools will aid 28 SJKTs in Penang, funding infrastructure, STEM programmes and digital facility upgrades.
GEORGE TOWN: The RM50 million federal allocation for the maintenance of National-Type Tamil Schools (SJKT) nationwide is set to benefit 28 such schools in Penang.
Penang Tamil Schools Special Committee Chairman Datuk Seri S. Sundarajoo said the funds will be distributed based on each school’s actual needs.
He clarified that, following state practice since 2008, the aid will not be disbursed as direct cash payments.
“Federal government funds will be used to upgrade infrastructure, learning facilities, and student development programmes, including STEM programmes and robotics classes,” he said.
Sundarajoo added that the Penang State Government has already channelled RM2.42 million for 2025 to assist SJKTs.
This state funding covers classroom upgrades with new whiteboards, smart boards, smart televisions, and other digital facilities.
He expressed gratitude for the increased federal allocation of RM50 million this year, compared to RM30 million in 2024.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow welcomed the Prime Minister’s announcement of the increased funding.
“The increase is highly significant, especially for vernacular schools that have long required assistance to upgrade basic facilities and improve learning environments,” he said.
Chow explained that continuous funding is needed for basic facilities, equipment, furniture, and teaching materials.
He noted that while most Penang SJKTs have upgraded facilities since 2008, issues like land ownership status persist.
“The allocation for SJKTs carries a deeper meaning for the Indian community,” Chow emphasised.
He said it serves as recognition for the role and contribution of Tamil schools within the national education system.
Chow earlier celebrated 24 students from Penang SJKTs who won over 80 medals at the World Robot Games 2025 in Taipei.
The students were guided by Syscore Academy at the international competition held from November 25 to December 1 last year.
The World Robot Games is a major global robotics and STEM platform.
It brought together over 1,000 participants from 10 countries including Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore.
