No fatwa on Zumba

GEORGE TOWN: Penang Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Mohd Rashid Hasnon today called on those who wanted the Zumba dance to be banned as it was unIslamic to show proof.
He said the administration took a progressive approach in managing the state and the dance was one of the ways to promote a healthy lifestyle.
"We are living in a society where men and women mix around normally. Those who say the dance is unIslamic should justify their claims," he said in a press conference today.
Rashid was responding to call by a non-governmental organisation to ban the dance.
The NGO had claimed women dancing to the upbeat music in public was against Islamic teachings.
Rashid also said there was no fatwa on the issue after he checked with the Penang mufti's office.
He said Zumba dancing in public was not a problem as long as the dancers were appropriately dressed.
