MERSING: An ambulance driver was held yesterday after he allegedly raped a nurse in an ambulance at the compound of a hospital here on Sept 4.
The 31-year-old suspect had allegedly driven the nurse to a secluded spot at the hospital before sexually assaulting her.
It is learnt that the suspect had earlier taken the victim and a male nurse on a patient-transfer trip to another hospital in the state.
When they returned to their workplace at 12.45am on Sept 4, the male nurse left them while the victim, in her 30's and seated in the rear of the ambulance, decided to tidy up the vehicle.
It is learnt that the suspect then approached his colleague and offered to drive her to her ward at a nearby building.
However, the woman declined and continued cleaning the vehicle.
It is learnt that minutes later the weary nurse fell asleep in the ambulance as she felt fatigued after a tiresome day at work.
Police said when she awoke, she found the ambulance was no longer at the emergency centre but was parked behind a nurses' quarters with the rear door locked and the suspect next to her.
The victim told police that she put up a struggle to escape when the suspect started undressing her.
It is learnt that the man performed oral sex on the woman before raping her. When it was over, he fled the scene and went into hiding.
Sources said it was not until yesterday that police traced the suspect before nabbing him. The man is being held under a seven-day remand order.
Mersing police chief DSP Zulkifli Hashim was not reachable for comment at press time.
