Labourer acquitted on drug trafficking charge

IPOH: The High Court today acquitted a 31-year-old labourer without calling for his defence on a charge of drug trafficking two years ago.
Judicial Commissioner Noorin Badaruddin, in doing so, held that the prosecution had failed to raise a prima facie case against Sariff Shafie.
Sariff was charged with trafficking in 226g of cannabis behind a house at 105, Kampung Ujong Pasir, Pengkhalan Bharu, Pantai Rems, at 5.30pm on Sept 29, 2012.
The offence under Section 39B (1)( a) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952 carries the death sentence on conviction.
Sariff was represented by lawyer Charan Singh while Deputy Public Prosecutor How May Ling appeared for the prosecution.
