DAP MP asks why 'mismanaged' incinerator contract awarded to same company

KUALA LUMPUR: A DAP MP questioned why the Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Ministry has given a new three-year contract to XCNT Technology Sdn Bhd, to continue, what he claims, "mismanaging" the Pulau Pangkor incinerator.
Referring to the recent report released by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on the shortcomings of the incinerators in Pulau Pangkor, Pulau Langkawi, Cameron Highlands and Pulau Tioman, Dr Ong Kian Ming (Serdang) was surprised the ministry had awarded the RM3.56 million contract to XCNT, as stated in the ministry's website.
PAC, in its report, pointed out that the ministry had failed in its responsibility to do the proper due diligence in selecting the technology proposed by XCNT especially given that past prototypes used by the same company in the Kuala Terengganu City Council (MPKT) had failed and the prototype in UiTM Shah Alam was only burning waste paper.
Ong told a press conference at parliament lobby today that the awarding of the contract to operate and maintain the Pulau Pangkor incinerator to the company showed the ministry has no regard to the well-being of the Pulau Pangkor residents.
He said in September, members of Kami Tak-Nak Insinerator (KTI), an NGO which is campaigning against the proposed incinerator in Taman Beringin, Kepong, visited the Pulau Pangkor incinerator and found that the problems identified in the Auditor-General's report, like the failure to separate waste before incineration and the improper disposal of the ash, were still present.
He suggested the minister, Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan, organise a trip for Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Rakyat MPs and those living in Kepong to Pangkor to view the incinerator in order to evaluate how well it is managed.
