Nine members of 'Geng Cicak Bukit Lintang' arrested for motorcycle theft
MALACCA: Police have arrested nine members of the 'Geng Cicak Bukit Larang' believed to be involved in a motorcycle theft syndicate in the Malacca Tengah district with losses totaling RM150,000.
Malacca Tengah police chief ACP Shaikh Abdul Adzis Shaikh Abdullah said all of the suspects did have permanent jobs and were detained in several separate locations in the district within two days from last Wednesday.
He said the ringleader known by his nickname 'Cicak' (lizard), who targets five different models of motorcycle namely Honda EX5, Yamaha 125Z and RXZ, Kawasaki RR and Honda Wave, has been active around Bandar Hilir, Bukit Baru and Ayer Keroh since the last two years.
Cicak, in his 20s, was the first to be arrested while he was riding a stolen motorcycle in Semabok at 2 am last Wednesday, he said.
"Inspection by the police on Cicak and the motorcycle has lead to the arrests of eight other members in several separate locations and the police believed they have succeed in solving 50 cases of stolen motorcycles in the district," he told a press conference, here today.
Following further investigations, he said police found 30 motorcycle frames and engines that had been disassembled in Sungai Umbai, Telok Mas, here and three motorcycles which used stolen components.
He said these syndicates moved in groups of three to four using two motorcycles in housing areas, shopping malls around Melaka and targeted motorcycles parked without additional locks in quiet areas.
"They only need 12 seconds to steal a motorcycle using a screwdriver which has been modified to a T-shaped tool to insert it to the ignition key.
"Apart from that, they also used other methods to steal and sell, disassemble or utilise the components for own use while the frames will be dumped in the river," he said.
Hence, he advised motorcycle owners to park their machines in a safe location and use additional locks to prevent it from theft. – Bernama
