KUALA LUMPUR: A Segi college student, Wong Sing Zeh, has come forward to alert the public on a conman in his fifties who gives a tale of having lost his wallet and seeks money to go home in Sabah and subsequently fleece the good samaritan off their monies with more soppy tales.
Wong's dilemma started on March 28 when the man who identified himself as Lai Fui Peng asked her for RM500 to buy a plane ticket to return to Sandakan, Sabah for Qing Ming festival as he lost his wallet.
Feeling sympathetic, she who worked part-time at Giant USJ 1, gave him RM500 and purchased RM25 air time for his prepaid mobile phone.
She also provided him with her mobile number and bank account number so that he can deposit the money he borrowed.
However, instead of repaying, Lai, in his fifties, demanded for more money under the pretext of him having no money to buy food, to return to Penang for work and other excuses.
Feeling pity, she sent him RM1,000 from her savings and more than RM2,000 borrowed from friends and family members. In total she gave him RM4,670.
But when he started harassing her for more money, she realised she was conned and lodged a police report at the USJ 8 police station on April 15.
MCA Public Complaints Bureau chief Datuk Seri Michael Chong cautioned the public about conmen who use various tactics to scam people off their money.
