Safety tips during and after earthquake

    KUALA LUMPUR: Following the earthquake which hit Ranau, Sabah yesterday, the Meteorological Department has issued a statement on various safety measures to be taken in the event of a quake.
    According to a statement quoted in Met facebook, should one be caught inside a building during an earthquake, take shelter under a sturdy table or door threshold or at a corner.
    Choose a location which gives air to breathe and avoid windows, book racks heavy mirror, flower pots or other heavy objects which may tumble.
    Switch off electricity supply and do not strike a match or light a candle as there maybe a gas leak.
    If one is outside of a building, move to an open space and avoid places with power lines, electric poles, tall buildings, walls, or lamp posts.

    In the event of an earthquake, do not use the lift but watch out using stairs as some maybe damaged.
    If one is in a moving vehicle, one should stop as soon as possible after finding a suitable site but do not park the vehicle under a bridge, overhead cable or near a building.
    Stay inside the car until the quake has stopped. – Bernama
