WITH education and local talent development being two of the major contributors towards Malaysia’s national competitiveness, Shell Malaysia has awarded top student achievers with scholarship amounting to RM12 million.
“We recognise that as Malaysia advances towards becoming a high income economy, we will need a larger pool of professionals who are highly qualified and able to make the country more competitive,” said Shell Malaysia chairman Iain Lo.
For over 40 years, the oil and gas company has invested RM400 million in providing educational assistance to the best students in the country. There are currently over 153 Shell Malaysia scholars in local universities and abroad. This year, 35 student recipients were selected out of 3,000 entries across the nation. These students will continue their undergraduate programmes either locally or internationally in engineering and science-based courses.
Acknowledging that talent and leadership development plays a crucial role in encouraging the success of businesses in a competitive global market, Lo paid tribute to successful Shell alumni that have made headlines through their contributions as national and corporate leaders.
Besides providing scholarships, Shell also offers student programmes including the Shell Eco-Marathon, a global competition where students design, build, and drive the most energy-efficient car. There’s also Shell Ideas360, an international challenge for students to develop game-changing ideas to tackle energy, water and food issues.
The company also participates in several human capital initiatives. This includes its pledge to increase the number of women in leadership or board positions through the “30-per cent Club Malaysia”. The organisation is a group of chairmen and business leaders who are committed to bringing more women onto Malaysia corporate boards.
In line with the government’s aspiration to producing qualified workers, Shell has been running a technical training programme, ProjekLINK, in Sabah and Sarawak to fulfil the needs of highly-skilled oil and gas welders in Malaysia. The programme is an effort to enhance employability through technical and vocational training in the industry.
Not only that, Shell has also collaborated with Talent Corporation Malaysia to attract experienced and professionals Malaysians working abroad to return home and help elevate the industries in Malaysia.
