Easier access to knowledge

OPEN University Malaysia (OUM) recently launched myINSPIRE, a new learning management system which comprises an easy navigation structure which makes learning more convenient and meaningful.
LEARN ON-THE-GO
With the myINSPIRE learning system, those interested in attaining knowledge and information can access their courses with ease using their smartphones and tablets. Custom-crafted from Moodle, which is an open-source course management system, myINSPIRE sounds perfect for today’s millennials, offering learning on the go with features that include gamification, e-modules, access links to other web resources like Google drive. The science of the system allows learners to keep track of their learning and lecturers to monitor the learners’ progress.
Moving towards offering fully on-line courses, OUM president and vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mansor Fadzil said, “With myINSPIRE, learners can access learning materials more quickly via its learning modules as these can be stored and viewed on smartphones. Learners can also interact and study, while on the go, at any time, anywhere.” He added that OUM will eventually offer digital modules for all its programmes in the faculty, instead of print modules.
MODERN METHOD
Deputy High Education Minister Datuk MaryYap was present to officially launch the educational endeavour. She mentioned in her speech about one of the objectives of the country’s education blueprint which aims to improve the percentage of higher education enrolment in the country from 48% to 70%.
“One of the ways to raise the numbers is via on-line learning,” she said. The Malaysian Education Blueprint 2015-2025 recognises that learning technologies can improve a student’s access to and performance in higher education. “It calls for the use of blended learning to personalise the learning experience. And I can see OUM is doing this through its flexible mode of learning, which combines face-to-face tutorials with on-line learning and self-study,” Yap added.
LEARN TO PROGRESS
OUM plays a significant role in changing the mindsets of Malaysians, providing flexible courses, learning methods and systems, and offering work and study options. Championing the lifelong learning principle that encourages one, no matter what age, to pursue knowledge and keep learning – Yap’s ministry was more than happy to support myINSPIRE and the university’s efforts in making tertiary education available to anybody and everybody. “With the current economic situation, Malaysians must accept the fact that higher education is the best way to upgrade the quality and standard of living,” added Yap.
With the majority of OUM learners comprising those in the workforce, myINSPIRE will surely come as a positive tool as a user-friendly and easily accessible learning platform. Visit the OUM website for more information.
