SHAH ALAM: The Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) will review the payment for yearly jetty charges in the state.
Selangor executive councillor Ean Yong Hian Wah (pix) said the proposed RM600 licence fee had drawn some protest among the jetty owners.
"Luas has studied the jetty management in the state and has created an action plan to ensure the jetty construction and activities can be made without impacting the water.
"The state government has instructed Luas to review the yearly charges so it would not burdened the fishermen," Yong told the media when met at his office here.
Yong, who is the committee chairman for the Selangor Local Government, New Village Development and Legalising of Factories, said the purpose of implementing the fee is to legalise its usage as currently there is no proper management in using the jetty.
"The jetties have different sizes and structures as we don't have a proper management.
"We want it to be standardized and follow the safety elements," he said.
The jetty tax issue is one of the 'hot topics' in the Sungai Besar by-election campaign.
Recently, Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said Selangor must be stern in implementing the charges.
Shabery said about 6,000 fishermen had disagreed with the proposed RM600 fee as they could not afford it.
To date, there are 1,350 jetties and 19 fishing villages in Selangor.
