PETALING JAYA: Controversial rapper Namewee (pix) has denied accusations that he insulted Islam in his latest music video, which some quarters claim has tarnished the image of mosques.
The viral video, titled 'Oh My God', features four men dancing and singing in a mosque in Tanjung Bungah, Penang, as well as other places of worship like temples and churches around the state.
In a post on Facebook, Namewee urged for a stop to the "slander and accusations" leveled against him and brought attention to the fact that he had even collaborated with a Nasyid singer in the past.
He said he was the only Chinese singer in history "to perform a duet with Nasyid singer Yasin Suleiman."
He shared a clip of the video and said the song was nominated for the Best Lyrics category in local music awards show Anugerah Industri Muzik 2016.
It was reported that 20 local non-governmental organisations (NGO) had lodged police reports over the 'Oh My God' video for being "disrespectful" towards Islam.
Police in Penang have initiated investigation into the video under Section 295 of the Penal Code for defiling a place of worship.
On Tuesday, Penang Northeast district police chief Assistant Commisioner Mior Faridalathrash Wahid said Namewee is currently abroad and will be arrested on his return to Malaysia to assist in the investigations.
