Movie Review - Don't Breathe

30 Aug 2016 / 16:08 H.

AFTER watching a film like this, you realise that not all of the horrors that take place in a house are because of a supernatural presence.
The story is simple. Three young delinquents – Rocky (Jane Levy), her boyfriend Money (Daniel Zovatto), and Alex (Dylan Minnette) – rob the rich of their valuables, which they then sell for cash.
Money is tipped off about a blind war veteran who has hundreds of thousands in cash – which came from a settlement following the death of his daughter in an accident – stashed in his house in an abandoned Detroit neighbourhood.
So, confident that they can take on an old and blind man, the trio go in with a plan to get the money.
Except, the plan goes horribly awry, and the blind man (Stephen Lang) turns out to be a muscular badass with acute hearing, who shoots and kills without hesitation.
The best thing about a simple story is that you get to enjoy all other aspects of the movie without needing much attention to digest the plot.
And that also means even the smallest twist, when done cleverly like director Fede Alvarez did in this movie, becomes an alarming one.
Also, because the movie is so fast-paced, and the cinematography precisely arranged, you’ll find that you enjoy the movie so much you have no time to get bothered by the flaws.
In terms of acting, Lang was absolutely fantastic as an dignified old geezer who’s a fierce but deranged protector of his house.
As the story progresses, you’ll soon find yourself questioning the amount of pity and contempt you have for the blind man. And no matter how wretched he is, the real seed has been planted: true horror never dies.
