PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will be allocated RM1 billion to improve coverage and increase broadband speed, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak.
He said as an open democratic nation, the government aspires to enhance the online information transmission channel.
"MCMC will provide RM1 billion to ensure the coverage and quality of broadband nationwide reaches up to 20 megabytes per second," he said in his 2017 Budget speech in Parliament today.
Najib, who is also Finance Minister, further noted that effective January 2017, fixed line broadband service providers will offer services at a higher speed for the same price.
"For example, those who subscribe to a five megabytes per-second package at RM149 will enjoy a package with twice the speed, which is 10 megabytes per- second.
"Within the next two years, the speed for this package will be doubled with a price reduction of 50%," he added.
