JAPANESE automaker Nissan has introduced a new hybrid variant of its popular X-Trail crossover in its Japanese domestic home market recently.
Minus the ‘Hybrid’ badges, a different instrument panel, and a pair of vertically stacked LED foglights, the hybrid variant looks identical to its non-hybrid siblings inside and out.
Underneath, the X-Trail Hybrid utilises a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that works in conjunction with an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack placed in the boot. Completing the package is the Nissan brand’s X-Tronic CVT automatic transmission. While the conventional engine develops 147hp and peak torque of 207Nm, the electric system further adds 41hp and instant additional torque rated at 160Nm. Predictably, the hybrid version boasts lower fuel consumption of 4.8 litres/100km and 75% less CO2 emissions over its non-hybrid siblings.

Notably, safety has been enhanced in the Japan-spec X-Trail Hybrid as it gains with the Forward Emergency Braking feature as standard. Other notable changes include the crossover’s aerodynamically optimized floor and low-rolling resistance tires to improve its efficiency further.

Presently, the X-Trail Hybrid is only available in Japan, and is offered in both standard two-wheel-drive and all-wheeldrive Black Xtreamer-X guises.
