JOHOR BARU: The Johor Barisan Nasional (BN) is determined to ensure that Pakatan Harapan deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is defeated in the 14th General Election (GE14), says its chairman, Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.
Holding on to the principle that everyone was entitled to contest, he said the state BN had no qualms about the former deputy prime minister contesting in any seat he so desired.
"All political parties want their opponents to lose in any election. I will make sure he does not win, just like how he wants me to lose.
"We will ensure that Muhyiddin loses all the seats he decides to contest," he said after officiating the 2018 Johor Pupils' Character 'Semarak' programme at Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina Johor Jaya here today.
It was reported that Muhyiddin, a former Johor Mentri Besar, hinted at contesting in the Gambir state seat as well as confirmed to wanting to contest in a parliamentary seat.
Meanwhile, Mohamed Khaled, who is also Johor Mentri Besar, said speculation on the seat that he would be contesting would be answered when BN chairman Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak, who is also Prime Minister, names the GE14 candidates, latest by next week.
"Let's wait for Najib to make the announcement. I follow whatever the decision," he added.
Earlier, Mohamed Khaled, who also officiated the groundbreaking ceremony of the Johor Affordable Housing Scheme (RMMJ) for Bandar Seri Alam, said the state had not only built a number of such homes but sold the houses at a lower price compared to other states in Peninsular Malaysia.
"A total of 1,637 units of affordable homes have been completed since 2013 in the Pasir Gudang parliamentary constituency alone, which includes Permas and Johor Jaya.
"(In fact,) we are targeting at constructing 11,460 units by 2021," he said, adding that the state government had also built about 18,000 units of affordable homes statewide since 2013.
The Mentri Besar said the Bandar Seri Alam RMMJ project, being managed by Sri Alam Properties (a subsidiary of UM Land Berhad), would see the construction of 1,122 house units on a 7ha land.
The houses, with a built-up area of 1,000 sq ft each, would be sold for only RM150,000, he added. — Bernama
