JKM has procedures to protect children against abuse

SINTOK: The Social Welfare Department (JKM) has specific procedures to protect children from abuse and neglect by their parents and guardians.
Director-general Mohd Fazari Salleh said most people are not aware of this and some would let the abuse continue as they were unsure about reporting to the authorities.
"We can rescue children who are exposed to negative things and place them under us, but that would be the last resort.
"We can take the case to court to determine if the victim should be placed in our care centres or placed with eligible persons such as the grandparents or uncle to look after them," he told reporters at the Executive Certificate Presentation Programme 2018 held at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), here today.
A total of 74 officers from JKM received their Social Work Practice Certificate (SPEC) from UUM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Seri Dr Mohamed Mustafa Ishak.
At the event, Mohamed Mustafa also presented Parole Intervention Executive Certificates to 40 officers from the Malaysian Prisons Department who attended the course two weeks ago.
Meanwhile, Mohd Fazari said the JKM urged local communities to establish a social support system in the villages so that abuse cases could be easily detected and resolved.
"JKM cannot work on its own and the support of the community is very important so that these cases are tackled together and not allowed to continue," he said.
He also urged JKM officers throughout the country to keep up with developments in information technology in order to provide the best service to the people. — Bernama
