JOHOR BARU: The Johor Baru Tiong-Hua Association said tycoon Tan Sri Robert Kuok is an icon for all Malaysians, especially local entrepreneurs.
Its president Datuk Seri Tey Kim Chai praised the Johor born Kuok when contacted by theSun.
He said Kuok and his family had been generous to the state in their charitable works, adding that Kuok had made a generous donation to a local Chinese high school in the state.
"As Johoreans, we all feel proud of him," he said.
Tey said the national leadership should recognise the tycoon's contributions to the nation.
Kuok was in the limelight after controversial blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin alleged last week that opposition party DAP was being financed by the tycoon through his nephew, James, and that Kuok also had an agenda to replace the current government.
Various Umno leaders then came out to condemn Kuok, including Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nazir Abdul Aziz.
In his statement on Monday Kuok, however, denied the allegations by Raja Petra, and thanked the government for the opportunities given to him.
Tey said people should study why these articles appeared at this time and should question the motive behind it.
He also urged writers to abide by professional ethnics.
"Good writing should be based on facts, not on false allegations."
On Nazri's criticism of Kuok, Tey said people will use their wisdom to judge a leader.
"We need quality leaders, and leaders with moderate viewpoints," he added.
Meanwhile, the Johor Baru Tiong-Hua Association and five main Chinese clan associations in the city issued a joint statement today urging Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak to make an effort to stop the issue of false allegations against Kuok.
The clan associations expressed concern that the issue would affect racial harmony if not amicably resolved.
They also urged the government to take stern action to tackle fake news.
