Lawyer Shafee fully settles RM1m bail
KUALA LUMPUR: The remaining half of the bail for lawyer Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah was paid by his son Muhammad Farhan Shafee today.
Farhan was seen paying the remaining RM500,000 of the RM1 million bail at the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex together with two individuals who were the sureties for Shafee at about 1.30pm.
Shafee was not present in court today.
Shafee had claimed trial last week to two charges under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 involving RM4.3 million and RM5.2 million allegedly received from Najib.
He also faces two charges of violating the Income Tax Act 1967 by omitting the income received from Najib in statements made to the Inland Revenue Board on two occasions in 2015.
Bail was set at RM1 million for all four charges and Shafee had paid half of it last week.
The money laundering charges came after an officer from the Attorney-General's Chambers affirmed an affidavit saying Shafee had received RM9.5 million from Najib to lead the prosecution in the Sodomy 2 case against PKR president-elect Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
He denied that the RM9.5 million was payment for prosecuting Anwar, claiming it was for representing Barisan Nasional in election petition cases.
