MCCF proposes special school for troubled students

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Community Care Foundation (MCCF) has called on the government to set up a special rehabilitation school for children with disciplinary problems.
Its chairman Halim Ishak said the school was not like a juvenile school for students who had been sentenced by the Juvenile Court, but for troubled students who often skipped school and violated school discipline.
"There are naughty students who have disciplinary problems at schools and are not attending schools, but have never committed any crime, they must be separated from other students and placed in special schools for early rehabilitation.
"The early-stage prevention may help and save them from being exposed to more serious negative influences outside the school," he told Bernama here today.
The proposal was made following the arrest of seven youths aged between 11 and 18, most of whom were school dropouts, in connection with a fire at the Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah residential religious school, which claimed the lives of 21 students and two teachers.
Halim said China was among the countries that had introduced such schools to address the problem of truancy due to addiction to video games and the internet.
He said the special school should emphasise on religious and civics education. — Bernama
