MidValley Mall fire caused by damaged wiring

PETALING JAYA: Damaged wiring connected to the chiller motor led to overheating and caused a fire to break out in a convenience store at MidValley Mall on Saturday.
"Overheating and damaged wires that connect to the chiller motor at the convenience store is the reason behind the fire," said Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department chief Khirudin Drahman.
Khirudin also expressed disappointment with the attitude of shoppers and onlookers who were more interested in taking photos and videos of the incident rather than heeding calls to evacuate the premises.
"Don't be a hero and don't waste your time by taking videos instead of evacuating and following firemen's orders.
"The firemen arrived within five minutes after fire broke out at about 7.10pm ... we had work to do but some people were busy taking videos from various angles. Such acts would disrupt our rescue mission," he said when contacted.
A Fire and Rescue Department spokesman on Saturday said the fire damaged 40% of the convenience store.
The mall's management had tried to douse the flames using its hose reel and fire extinguishers before firemen arrived.
No injuries were reported in the incident.
Netizens also took the opportunity to share footage of the evacuation on Twitter and Facebook.
