PETALING JAYA: A new policy on abandoned cars is being formulated by the Natural Resources and Environment ministry.
Its minister Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said he wants to tackle the problem of abandoned vehicles left rotting on roadsides also creates a place for mosquito and rats to breed.
"Soon, we will even have aeroplanes left abandoned and rotting away," he joked after launching the National Conference on Sustainability and Responsible Business yesterday at the Sunway Hotel and Spa here.
Wan Junaidi admitted that creating new policies will be a tedious process but it would need to be done to rectify the problem.
He also admitted similar initiatives in the past have failed as there were gaps between the involved authorities like the state government as well as local councils.
"We learn from the previous failed initiatives. This time we will engage all relevant stakeholders to tackle the problem."
Earlier in the day, Wan Junaidi called for local businesses to play their role by being part of the solution in sustainable development efforts by not just focusing not economical gains, but also in their impact on other aspects like social and environmental areas.
"In Malaysia, as in rest of the world, there is a growing demand for land and water, mineral and agriculture and even human resources. While the government has played its role by implementing policies and regulations to promote sustainability, business must also be part of the solution," he said in his speech.
"Businesses should not focus only in line with the economic needs of the communities we serve, but also in line with their social, environmental, health and recreational needs."
