Ops Selamat sees drop in traffic accidents and burglaries

KUALA LUMPUR: Police are encouraged by the results of Chinese New Year festival's Ops Selamat and will step up efforts to reduce road accidents.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun said police have achieved a lot of positives in this year's Ops Selamat which had two-pronged approach. It was to reduce traffic accidents as well as burglaries.
"We might not achieve our exact targets but I can assure there were a lot of positives in our recent Ops Selamat. The full statistics in regards with accident and fatalities rates will be announced this Wednesday in our closing ceremony," he told reporters after attending Bukit Aman monthly assembly today.
Ops Selamat 12, launched in conjunction with the Chinese New Year on Feb 9, has recorded 9,466 accident cases with 91 fatalities.
Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement director SAC Sharul Othman Mansor had said that the number of accidents recorded in the six days of this year Ops Selamat showed a decrease by 554 cases from the 10,020 cases recorded in the corresponding period during Ops Selamat in 2017 which saw 98 fatalities.
Of the 91 traffic fatalities, 61 victims involved motorcyclists and pillion riders.
Ops Selamat 12 was focusing on motorcyclists, apart from six main offences often committed by road users.
The six offences are driving over the speed limit, driving on emergency lanes, crossing double white lines to overtake, beating traffic lights, using mobile phones while driving and cutting queues.
According to Sharul Othman, so far 89,385 summonses had been issued for various road offences during the period.
The latest Op Selamat was held from Feb 9 until 23, or a week before the start of and week after the last day of the Chinese New Year.
