Sunway Lagoon's rides of a lifetime

24 Jul 2018 / 16:51 H.

SUNWAY Lagoon is made up of six themed parks: the Water Park, Scream Park, Amusement Park, Wildlife Park, Nickelodeon Lost Lagoon, and Extreme Park.
A single entry pass or ticket gives you access to all six parks, including most of the rides and activities within them.
For those who are adventurous at heart, Sunway Lagoon offers a unique challenge: to ride all 10 of the theme parks top 10 rides in one day.
The challenge is not for the faint of heart, the weak in fortitude, nor the physically unfit. It also helps to have a plan.
The Plan
Make sure you are up for the challenge. Riding all top-10 rides at Sunway Lagoon is a physically challenging workout . Also, make sure you arrive at the park as early as possible. Its doors open daily at 10am, and close at 6pm.
Eight hours might seem like a lot of time for 10 rides, but set aside some time to rest and have your meals, and do not forget to drink plenty of water.
Note that the suggested most efficient route stated here will not take you through the rides in order. Also, note that some of these rides have height and weight requirements, and some require extra charges. These will be indicated accordingly.
Lost City of Gold Scream Coaster
Located close to the main entrance of the park is the number nine ride on the list. The 1 minute 45 second roller coaster ride takes riders up hills and down two drops before plunging deep into the twisting dark mines of the lost city.
This is one of the tamer rides on the list.
As far as roller coasters go, the Lost City of Gold Scream Coaster offers up a nice dose of thrills and excitement without being too challenging. A part of the ride is in total darkness, which makes it even more fun.
Visitors must be at least 1.4m in height to enjoy this ride.
Pirate’s Revenge
Past the Scream Park and towards the Wildlife Park is the number eight ride on the list. The ride, using the power of inertia, slowly swings as it gains speed and height before taking its riders on a full loop.
With nothing standing between you and the ground as you swing higher and faster, all you can do is have faith that the harness will hold you in your seat as you hang upside down, 24 metres above the ground.
Pirate’s Revenge is a spectacular experience for riders and spectators alike. It is also one of the longer rides on the list, and takes approximately 3 minutes and 35 seconds to complete.
Visitors must be at least 1.4m in height to enjoy this ride.
Tomahawk
Now head towards the suspension bridge in the Extreme Park, and you will see the entrance to the Tomahawk. This swinging pendulum ride sits at number seven on the list. It may look similar to Pirate’s Revenge, but it is a whole different experience.
The Tomahawk is a shorter ride, at approximately 2 minutes. It also looks smaller, but it takes its riders through two loops. Using its powerful motors, the ride is not dependent on inertia and can accelerate its passengers faster and have them upside down for longer.
The rider also encases riders in a roll cage, but this does not take away from the thrill of the experience.
Visitors must be at least 1.4m in height to enjoy this ride.
Bungee Jump
Once you have found your bearings, head up the tower and cross Malaysia’s Longest Pedestrian Suspension Bridge. Near the end of the bridge is ride number three on the list, the Bungee Jump, where you fall headfirst for 21m, with bungee cords tied to your feet, of course.
Bungee Jump is one of the few pay-per-ride experiences on the list. Each jump (or plunge) costs RM75.50 (MyKad holders), and RM130.20 (non-MyKad holders).
But make sure that your pockets are empty before you dive!
G-Force X
Just to the left of the staircase heading down from the suspension bridge, is the number two ride on the list.
To call the G-Force X an extreme ride is an understatement. The ride is a slingshot that slings riders 65m into the air and accelerates them from 0 to 120km per hour in two seconds.
This is a test of endurance. The amount of G-forces your body goes through during this ride may cause you to pass out, but do not fret, the ride is perfectly safe.
G-Force X seats two at a time, and is also one of the pay per ride experiences on the list. It costs RM30.20 (MyKad holders) and RM60.40 (non-MyKad holders).
Monsoon 360
Now it is time to get into the water. Head out of the Extreme Park, towards Nickelodeon Lost Lagoon. Walk up the hill where all the water slides are, and look for the Monsoon 360.
You will see people picking up and strapping boards to their backs, a tall tower, and hear screaming in the background; you cannot miss it.
The Monsoon 360 is the number one ride in the Sunway Lagoon’s top 10 rides list, and it earned this coveted title.
With a board strapped to your back, you will be led into a chamber. After crossing your arms over your chest, the door will close, and a countdown timer will begin. When time is up, the floor will drop, and you will feel like you are free-falling, when in fact you are in a water slide, complete with twists and turns.
You can choose between the purple or the orange tube, each with its own unique experience.
The Monsoon 360 is only for riders above 1.2m in height, and between 45kg to 136kg in weight.
Cameroon Climb
The next two rides on the list are located in the Water Park. The first is the Cameroon Climb, the number five ride on the list, a double tube water slide that will test your faith in gravity.
From the top of the ride, you and your friend slide down a steep drop for 15m, before the slide curves up and drops again for another 8m. You may even feel like you are going to fly off of the double tube. (However, you won’t.)
Visitors must be at least 1.1m in height to experience this ride.
Vuvuzela
This, the number six ride on the list, is also Malaysia’s Largest Water Ride and the most recognisable structure at Sunway Lagoon.
This tube ride fits four to six guests at a time, and requires quite a climb to get to.
The Vuvuzela lulls its riders by taking them through relatively gentle turns 30m above the ground, before enclosing them in a tube and dropping them screaming into the giant 22m diameter funnel.
However, do not think the ride ends there. The pipe holds some surprises as well.
Visitors must be at least 1.1m in height to experience this ride.
FlowRider
These last two rides are located on the Surf Beach. The FlowRider, which is at number four on the list, is Malaysia's first Surf Simulator.
Don't be put off by those who get wiped out in the first few seconds, or by experienced surfers who can perform tricks. It is easier than it looks: all you need is balance.
First-timers should lie flat on the board and learn to turn by shifting their weight, before attempting to sit on the board.
Visitors must be at least 1.4m in height to enjoy this ride.
Scuba Diving in the City
The final challenge, the number 10 on the list, may seem like a relaxing time, but in reality is more like an endurance test.
Operated by Titan Scuba Asia, this experience is a rare opportunity to scuba dive not only in a controlled, safe environment, but also in fresh water.
Divers will have to learn the hand signals, safety protocols, and how to use the equipment properly, before heading for the deep. Your legs will definitely get a workout.
Scuba Diving in the City costs RM85 per person.
Survival tips
For the best experience, travel as light as possible. Although taking pictures to show off later is fun, most of the rides on this list require riders to empty their pockets. This is especially true for the water rides.
Instead of lugging your stuff around, get a locker. A standard locker will cost RM23.60, while a larger one will cost you RM42.50. Once you rent one, it is yours for the whole day, and you can access it using your wristband.
Once inside Sunway Lagoon, you do not have to bring your wallet with you. You can actually deposit money into your wristband, with a minimum deposit of RM50, at ticketing counters, lockers counters, and e-load counters. This optional payment method is valid only on the day of purchase, and cash refunds are available before 7pm.
Finally, if you want to take on this challenge but you do not like to queue, consider getting the Quack Xpress pass for RM66. The pass lets you cut the queue, and get into the special Quack Xpress lane which always has a shorter waiting time.
