Tossing of firecrackers razes fireworks stalls and vehicles

KUALA LUMPUR: Passing residents in this township witnessed a fireworks "display" of a different kind late on Chinese New Year when six makeshift stalls selling fireworks were destroyed in a fire on Jalan Mergastua.
The fire started after a playful game of exchanging lit fireworks began between two stall operators at about 11pm on Saturday before one landed on a table of firecrackers.
It set off the firecrackers, and within minutes thousands of fireworks piled up at the six stalls were ignited leading to a large fire at the scene.
The stall owners fled the scene soon after and it is believed that banned fireworks were among the items they had put up for sale.
Fortunately, firemen arrived the scene within five minutes and managed to bring the flames under control.
Jinjang Fire and Rescue department operations officer Rosli Aris when contacted said no casualties were reported in the incident but three parked vehicles, a Toyota Vios and a motorcycle were almost fully destroyed while a Honda City was partially damaged by fire.
He said firemen managed to put out the flames within 30 minutes.
Kuala Lumpur police CID chief SAC Rusli Mat said as for now, the case is being probed as a fire report.
