KUALA LUMPUR: The Tunku Temenggong of Kedah, Tan Sri Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah is the new chairperson of the Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC).
She took over from Tan Sri Shahriman Tunku Sulaiman for the 2018-2021 term at a simple ceremony held at the MRC headquarters, here today.
Since its establishment 70 years ago, Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz is the first woman to lead the humanitarian voluntary organisation that currently has 300,000 members nationwide.
Speaking to reporters after the handing over ceremony, Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz said she was looking forward to seeing active participation of youngsters in the organisation as youth-related activities were one of the visions of the World Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
"I also feel that communication is lacking between MRC and the local communities especially in the rural areas, hence our priority now is to enhance communications with the communities within the country.
"Besides, I am also looking forward to meet MRC President Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who is also the Prime Minister, and officials of other related ministries such as Health Ministry, Youth and Sports Ministry as well as Women and Family Development Ministry," she added.
At the event, 14 executive board members were appointed by Shahriman, who helmed MRC for the last 16 years appointed as its honorary advisor. — Bernama
