Bekas Ketua Pengarah DBP Firdaus Abdullah meninggal dunia hari ini

KUALA LUMPUR: Bekas Ketua Pengarah Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) Datuk Dr Firdaus Abdullah, 79, yang juga dikenali sebagai seorang penulis dan penyajak, meninggal dunia hari ini.

DBP memaklumkan perkhabaran itu menerusi Facebook rasminya dan menzahirkan ucapan takziah kepada ahli keluarga di atas pemergian Allahyarham.

“Warga Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka merakamkan ucapan takziah kepada keluarga Yang Berbahagia Datuk Dr Firdaus bin Abdullah (Mantan Ketua Pengarah DBP) yang telah kembali ke rahmatullah pada 11 April 2024 bersamaan 2 Syawal 1445.

“Semoga rohnya dicucuri rahmat dan ditempatkan dalam kalangan orang yang beriman. Amin,” menurut hantaran itu.

Sepanjang menjadi tokoh bahasa, Firdaus dikenali dengan beberapa karya antara kumpulan puisi Prisma Mimpi (1985), kumpulan puisi kanak-kanak Puisi Amira dan Falahi (1986), selain kebanyakan puisi ecerannya tersiar dalam antologi puisi dan terbitan berkala.

Beliau mendapat pendidikan awal di Sekolah Menengah Methodist Sentul, Kuala Lumpur sebelum melanjutkan pengajian dalam Sarjana Muda Sastera Kewartawanan dan Sains Politik di Northern Illinois University di Amerika Syarikat (AS), pada 1969.

Allahyarham juga mempunyai Sarjana dalam Komunikasi dan Hubungan Antarabangsa dari Ohio University dan Sarjana dalam Falsafah dan Perbandingan Politik dan PhD Sains Politik dari Columbia University, AS.

Dalam kerjaya pula beliau bermula sebagai Penolong Pensyarah (Sementara), Fakulti Ekonomi dan Pentadbiran Universiti Malaya dan pernah berkhidmat sebagai Timbalan Naib-Canselor (Hal Ehwal Pelajar), Universiti Malaya pada 1998 hingga 2001.

Di sektor swasta, beliau berkhidmat sebagai wartawan Berita Harian dan News Straits Times dan Pengerusi Eksekutif Utusan Karya Sdn Bhd, manakala dalam bidang politik beliau pernah dilantik sebanyak dua kali sebagai Senator bermula pada 2009.
