Empangan Pulau Pinang catat kapasiti melebihi 90%

Tiga empangan utama di Pulau Pinang mencatatkan kapasiti melebihi 90% menjelang musim kering yang dijangka bermula Januari depan.

GEORGE TOWN: Tiga empangan utama di Pulau Pinang berada pada tahap optimum menjelang musim kering yang dijangka bermula Januari depan.

Kapasiti efektif ketiga-tiga empangan itu melebihi 90% berdasarkan bacaan setakat hari ini.

Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif Perbadanan Bekalan Air Pulau Pinang (PBAPP) Datuk K. Pathmanathan berkata ia didorong oleh taburan hujan tinggi di kawasan tadahan air sejak September hingga November.

“Buat pertama kali sejak 2017, kapasiti efektif Empangan Air Itam dan Empangan Teluk Bahang melebihi paras 90%,” katanya dalam satu kenyataan.

Bacaan hari ini menunjukkan Empangan Teluk Bahang pada tahap 98.9%, Empangan Air Itam 93.4% dan Empangan Mengkuang Diperbesarkan 92.2%.

Pathmanathan berkata status ini memberi petanda positif terhadap kedudukan bekalan air negeri menjelang sambutan Krismas serta Tahun Baharu 2026.

Peningkatan kapasiti itu turut disumbangkan oleh pelaksanaan beberapa inisiatif PBAPP termasuk Pelan Tindakan Empangan Air Itam.

Inisiatif lain termasuk mengepam air ke kawasan perkhidmatan tertentu dari Loji Rawatan Air Sungai Dua bagi meminimumkan pelepasan air.

PBAPP juga melaksanakan pengisian semula strategik Empangan Teluk Bahang dengan air mentah dari kawasan tadahan air berhampiran.

Bagaimanapun, taburan hujan di Pulau Pinang menunjukkan trend penurunan bulan ini.

Musim kering dijangka bermula pada minggu kedua Januari 2026 manakala cuaca diramalkan kering pada Februari dan Mac.

Tempoh tersebut merangkumi sambutan Thaipusam, Tahun Baharu Cina dan Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

Pathmanathan berkata PBAPP dijangka melakukan pelepasan air secara ketara di dua empangan bagi menyokong keperluan air semasa musim perayaan.

Langkah itu juga sebagai persediaan menghadapi peningkatan kehadiran tetamu luar dan pelancong.
