Viral TikTok shows woman on crutches standing in crowded MRT women’s coach as seated passengers ignore her.
A recent viral TikTok video has reignited debate over courtesy and awareness in the MRT women’s coach after a woman on crutches was seen standing while passengers around her remained seated.
The coach, meant to offer women a safer and more considerate space, appeared to fall short of its purpose as no one stood up to offer help.
The clip, uploaded by user @natberacun, showed a packed train with the caption: “Crowded train but zero empathy. Has anyone experienced this before?”
The video quickly gained traction, with many Malaysians sharing similar experiences of being ignored despite visibly needing assistance.
“When I was pregnant, no one ever offered me a seat either. It was really sad — you know how emotional and extra sensitive you get when you’re pregnant,” one user called Tasha shared.
Even Rapid KL stepped into the discussion after the video went viral, responding: “Hi there. Did you ask for a seat? We’re afraid some may not have noticed, but this shouldn’t happen. So sad.”
Meanwhile, a few commenters claimed they spotted an empty seat in the video, suggesting that may have influenced the passengers’ reactions.
“Wait, correct me if I’m wrong, but it looks like there was an empty seat. Maybe that’s why no one offered their seat,” villAINess pointed out.
One user called Derrys explained why some Malaysians may hesitate to offer help, sharing: “I’m not saying they’re right, but if it were me, I’d also be scared to offer a seat just like that.
“I’ve offered my seat to someone who seemed to need it before, but they snapped at me and said, “Do you think I want your sympathy?” The embarrassment was on another level.”
The original poster later clarified that this wasn’t an isolated incident, saying: “This has happened three times. People clearly saw but ignored it. In this video I only needed to wait one station, so I let it go. The third time, a Prasarana police officer boarded the train. At first no one stood up, but only after being told did someone finally offer their seat.”
