Late-night fireworks and illegal motorcycle racing keep Sentul residents awake every weekend.
AT around 3am, the explosions begin. Fireworks follow soon after, and by the time the Subuh call to prayer approaches, many residents in Sentul are already awake — not by choice, but by noise.
In a Threads post directed at local police patrol officers, @nafd2_ said the disturbances can last for hours overnight, sometimes continuing until Subuh. She added that fireworks have been set off as late as 4am. “Hello, it’s the weekend, people want to rest,” the post read, adding that the noise has affected households with babies and senior citizens.
The complaint points to two recurring problems in the area: illegal motorcycle racing and late-night fireworks, which residents say have become routine, especially on weekends. Another resident, @achikezam, said the racing alone creates constant noise. “Those racing every weekend like there’s no tomorrow are really noisy!”
For families living nearby, the disturbance goes beyond irritation. Some say it directly affects children and babies trying to sleep.
One user, @kartikshaanmugan, who lives in an apartment in Sentul, said late-night fireworks and motorcycle activity frequently wake residents. The noise often begins around 1am or 2am and can startle young children. “It’s hard to sleep, especially since I have a baby at home,” he wrote, expressing hope that authorities would address the situation.
Others living near major roads such as the Duta–Ulu Klang Expressway (DUKE) say the gatherings can resemble organised meet-ups.
Describing one recent weekend, @dapurpuanstoberi said the noise from illegal racers near DUKE woke her household in the middle of the night. The activity continued into the early morning, forcing the family to stay awake and eventually head out for sahur. She also claimed to have seen groups of riders travelling in convoy along Jalan Tun Razak.
Other residents confirmed similar scenes across nearby neighbourhoods. @aaaqilahhh said fireworks are frequently set off near Sentul Point, adding that the activity often disturbs people living in surrounding residential areas. “If you want to play with fireworks, don’t disturb people’s sleep. This is a residential area.”
Some residents say the noise peaks between midnight and dawn. According to @nrafqhkmrdn, even apartment blocks several streets away are affected. Loud fireworks were heard around 1am recently, and groups of motorcycle riders often gather noisily near the LSH square area.
Questions about enforcement also appeared in the discussion. @asyraf_aliff, who lives near DUKE, described weekends as particularly disruptive due to motorcycles revving loudly in the early hours alongside fireworks. He questioned whether regular police or JPJ operations were being carried out to curb the activity.
The issue has also triggered calls for stricter rules on fireworks. One commenter, @ajezahmad, argued that the activity should be banned entirely, questioning its purpose during Ramadan and criticising the behaviour of those using them.
Others echoed that view, with @missbethalicious described the situation as unacceptable and called for fireworks to be banned outright.
Across the comments, late-night fireworks and illegal racing have turned what was once occasional noise into a regular weekend disturbance in Sentul.
