Tourist calls Malaysia a “city” she dislikes, Malaysians school her online

A tourist’s Threads post calling Malaysia a “city” she dislikes draws criticism from Malaysians over the factual error.

A tourist has found herself at the centre of online backlash after referring to Malaysia as a “city” she dislikes, sparking confusion — and irritation — among Malaysians.

In a Threads post following a popular travel trend, the user listed cities she loved, disliked and hoped to visit across Asia. However, eyebrows were raised when she wrote: “City I dislike: Malaysia 🇲🇾”

The post quickly caught the attention of Malaysians, many of whom were baffled by the claim — not because of the criticism itself, but because Malaysia is a country, not a city.

Netizens wasted no time calling out the mistake, with many pointing out that while it’s fair to dislike a destination, at least get the geography right.

“First , Malaysia is not a city. It’s a country. U can ask chatgpt if u dont believe me. Second, yes, pls don’t come again. We need a peaceful environment without a tourist like you,” one user called esmerelda8686 wrote, gaining 12,400 likes.

“Yes please, by all means, do not ever come here again.. u kinda ignorant about our country & cities but fret not world, if u have this kind of behaviour, please dont come,” alifaaaaaaaa_ahmad wrote.

Another user called melll.nguyen had a genuine take, stating: “Honestly I can understand not liking Malaysia if you’ve only been to KL. When I went there for the first time, I thought it was boring and not worth staying in for more than 2-3 days.

“But then I started seeing stories from friends who went to Penang, Sarawak, Sabah, Cameron Highlands, etc. Definitely looked a lot more appealing than KL to me.”
