NEW YORK: Britney Spears has sold the rights to her extensive music catalogue. The deal, reported by US media, is believed to be worth around $200 million.
The singer’s catalogue includes global hits like “…Baby One More Time” and “Oops!…I Did It Again”. The rights were reportedly purchased by music publisher Primary Wave.
Primary Wave’s portfolio already includes the works of artists like Whitney Houston, Bob Marley and Prince. Owners of publishing rights receive payment for every broadcast, album sale or commercial use.
The reported sum is comparable to the sale of Justin Bieber’s catalogue in 2023. Spears, 44, joins a growing list of artists who have sold their music rights in recent years.
This list includes Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Shakira and KISS. The music rights market allows artists to monetise their catalogues as long-term assets.
Major labels like Sony, Universal and Warner have expanded in this business. They are joined by specialist investors like Hipgnosis Songs Fund and Concord Music Publishing.
Spears shot to fame in the late 1990s but has largely stepped back from music recently. In 2021, a court terminated a 13-year conservatorship that controlled her finances.
The singer had described the arrangement, overseen by her father, as abusive. The exact amount of the Spears deal was not detailed in legal documents, according to reports.
