Swim Deep share personal new single ahead of fifth album release

British indie band Swim Deep has released its latest single, You, Me & Mary, offering a more intimate and reflective preview of its upcoming fifth studio album Hum, due out on June 19.

The track marks a softer turn for the Birmingham outfit, pairing sweeping string arrangements and layered synths with lyrics centred on family, grief and gratitude. Frontman Austin Williams said the song was inspired by a difficult period in his family’s life following a miscarriage during a holiday with his wife and daughter.

Reflecting on the experience, Williams said the couple found comfort in appreciating the family they already had. The song’s release now carries additional significance after the recent arrival of their second child.

Keyboardist James Balmont said the track originally had a more punk-inspired sound influenced by New Order before evolving into something more cinematic. Drawing inspiration from Recharge & Revolt by The Raveonettes, the band embraced a blend of melancholic strings and synthesisers.

Swim Deep’s latest era blends indie rock roots with a more ambitious, cinematic vision.

You, Me & Mary follows previous single Mud and arrives ahead of Hum, an album exploring themes of family, loss, responsibility and personal growth. According to Williams, the record reflects a period of transformation, documenting the challenges and rewards of building a life alongside loved ones.

The 10-track album features Pieces Of You, You, Me & Mary, I Keep Her Photograph With Me, Broken, The Throw, Such A Fool, Mud, Is There Something Going On, In Dreams Alive and Lift Me Up. The band describe the project as some of its heaviest, most adventurous and uplifting work in years, incorporating elements of 1990s grunge and alternative rock while retaining their signature indie-pop sensibilities.

The release comes at a time of renewed momentum for the band, which recently completed a sold-out tour across China and Thailand. Swim Deep have developed a particularly strong following across Asia, where it has headlined shows in Bangkok, Shanghai and Beijing and performed at festivals including Maha Rasop, Poy Festival and Hodgepodge Festival.

The group’s connection to the region extends beyond touring. Earlier this year, it collaborated with Japanese indie outfit Helsinki Lambda Club and previously teamed up with Thai indie-pop duo Dept on the track Good News.

Hum also marks a new chapter for the band following the arrival of guitarist J.J. Buchanan and a reunion with producer Bill Ryder-Jones, helping shape a record that finds the band looking both inward and forward.

Known for blending dream-pop textures with indie rock sensibilities, Swim Deep’s latest material suggests a group transforming personal upheaval into some of its most emotionally direct music to date.
