Doctrine of Love expands Jalen Ngonda’s soul catalogue
Soul singer Jalen Ngonda has released his second album Doctrine of Love via Daptone Records, continuing a rise that has taken him from classic soul revivalist to one of the genre’s most closely watched new voices.
The album follows his 2023 debut Come Around and Love Me and continues Ngonda’s blend of classic 60s and 70s soul with contemporary pop and R&B influences.
The release is led by focus track Burning Temptation, which also comes with a music video.
Ngonda said the album reflects his love for old soul records while keeping his work rooted in the present.
“It’s no exaggeration to say every day of my life I wish I would wake up in 1964 in Detroit recording with the Funk Brothers. But that’s not my life. So what I can do is express my thoughts and my fascination with that sound and period and just be an artiste.”
For Doctrine of Love, Ngonda worked again with close collaborators Vince Chiarito and Michael Buckley. The album builds on the momentum of Come Around and Love Me, which helped bring him wider attention after its release in 2023.
The album features 10 tracks, including Anyone in Love, Doctrine of Love, Mr Train Conductor, Burning Temptation, Love is Gone, I Can’t Ever Leave You, Hannah, What’s The Matter?, Good Good Love, Hang it On The Shelf and Taken Out Of The Picture.
His single If You Don’t Want My Love has surpassed 253 million streams and he has appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Later… with Jools Holland and The Graham Norton Show.
He signed with Daptone Records in 2022 and released Come Around and Love Me the following year. Ngonda has also collaborated with Jordan Rakei and Gorillaz.
