GEORGE TOWN: The Sungai Perak Raw Water Transfer Scheme (SPRWTS) does not require a water treatment plant based in Penang as the state will obtain treated water from Perak.
Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow (pix) said that discussions about the project are still being carried out and certain decisions, including the location of the plant, have yet to be determined.
“We have achieved a breakthrough in that Perak has finally agreed to consider selling treated water to Penang and there’s been only one meeting after the decision at both the state secretariats.
“There’s still much to negotiate so I ask I ask all to remain calm to let us continue negotiations and then ministry representatives will join in to reach an agreement,” he said at a media conference after the state assembly sitting here today.
He added that Perak had agreed in principle to provide treated water to Penang, but the final decision will be known after negotiations involving water companies from both states.
During the state assembly sitting earlier in the day, Lim Guan Eng (DAP-Air Putih) had questioned why a water treatment plant was not built in Penang after Perak agreed to supply water to Penang, citing several examples where receiving states would process the raw water in plants within their states.
Chow had informed Lim that Penang would be receiving treated water from Perak, so there was no need for a plant in Penang. -Bernama
