Flood victims ‘drained’ after moving to relief centre for third time this year

SEGAMAT: Most families in Kampung Seberang Batu Badak here can only stand and look on helplessly as their homes are inundated every time the Northeast Monsoon (MTL) season comes along.

For 29-year-old Nur Sholihah Raja Shahrin, what’s more weary is that she and her family have had to move three times this year to the temporary relief centre at the Kampung Batu Badak community hall.

She said that she, her husband Aman Syafi Zainal, 28, and four-year-old daughter Nia Aurora first moved to the centre in January before being forced to do so again when a major flood occurred in March.

“We haven’t even replaced the furniture and other appliances, which were damaged in the March floods, and here we go again.

“Previously, we only experienced floods once a year, and we would be prepared. Lately, they have become more frequent and this year alone we have been hit by floods three times,” she told Bernama today.

What makes the experience more harrowing is that during the floods in March, they had to stay at the relief centre for a month before the floodwaters fully receded and the authorities were satisfied that it was safe for everyone to go back to their respective homes.

Another victim, 48-year-old Mohd Razali Mohd Hasbul concurred, saying he too faced a similar predicament after being moved to the relief centre three times this year.

The fisherman said not only was his house inundated, but his income was also affected as he could not go out to fish due to the strong current in Sungai Segamat.

“We hope the government can come up with solutions to help solve our flood problems.

“All of us from Kampung Seberang Batu Badak were moved to the relief centre yesterday due to heavy rain. Today, the area is still flooded,” he said.

The number of flood victims in Segamat stands at 33 people from nine families from Kampung Seberang Batu Batak and Kampumg Sermin as of noon today. – Bernama
