Police conduct large-scale New Year’s Eve operation nationwide

KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), through the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT), is conducting a large-scale New Year’s Eve nationwide operation involving all contingents and districts from 8 pm last night until 5 am today.

Bukit Aman JSPT director Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri said the operation involves 4,378 police personnel, and various other law enforcement agencies such as the Road Transport Department, National Anti-Drug Agency, Department of Environment and the Immigration Department.

“The operation aims to enforce traffic laws and regulations by monitoring the flow of traffic at hotspots. It also aims to combat the activities of street thugs and prevent driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, which can lead to accidents or obstructions on the roads.

“The operation concept is divided into two, namely traffic control for smooth traffic flow during the New Year celebration and New Year’s Eve enforcement operations,“ he said in a statement today.

He said there are 17 locations for the New Year’s Eve celebrations in the Klang Valley, 10 in Kuala Lumpur and the rest in Selangor.

“Although there are no official celebrations at Dataran Merdeka and Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC), the PDRM has deployed officers to monitor public safety and order at these locations and facilitate traffic flow in the event of significant congestion.

“The police urges all road users to abide by traffic rules, be tolerant, prudent and cautious and focus on driving.

“Follow the instructions of the officers on duty at the scene to provide comfort to all road users and the public,“ he said.–Bernama
