GEORGE TOWN: Police not only tracked down a drug suspect at a rented room in Jalan Jelutong here on Sunday but also rescued a five-year-old boy who had clearly been physically abused.

Northeast district police chief ACP Che Zaimani Che Awang said the child was found with numerous injuries and bruises on his body.

“The child was staying with his biological mother and her boyfriend in the room that police raided around noon. He said he was beaten up by the man whom he called ‘daddy’ and by his own mother. But he did not explain why he was beaten.

“Police brought the victim to Penang Hospital and detained his mother and her boyfriend,” he said.

According to Che Zaimani, the doctor who examined the boy found injuries even on the victim’s genitals. However, the x-ray did not show any broken bones.

He said the child was being warded at the hospital and monitored by the Social Welfare Department.

Investigations revealed the 38-year-old man, a contract worker and divorcee, had 12 drug-related records, he said.

He said the couple who tested positive for drugs was also being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001. — Bernama
