BINTULU: A man believed to be suffering from mental health problems who burnt rubbish inside his home in Tanjung Kidurong here last night, alarmed residents who thought he was about to burn his own house.

The 30-year-old initially refused to open his front door when a team of firefighters and rescuers arrived at his house in Temenggong Ayong.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Operations Centre said in a statement today said that after failing to enter the premises, the team had to call police to persuade the man, who only agreed to open his front door 15 minutes later.

“Upon entering the house, it was found that the man had burned garbage in a drum on the upper floor of the house but the fire did not affect the structure of the house,“ the statement said.

Meanwhile, Bintulu district police chief Supt Zulkipli Suhaili said following the incident, the unemployed man was taken to the Tanjung Kidurong police station in a patrol car for further investigation.

“While in the hall, the man showed abnormal behaviour such as talking to himself. He was then taken to Bintulu Hospital for further action,“ he said, adding that the man had undergone psychological treatment at the hospital on Dec 13. - Bernama
