KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission has removed 2,354 deepfake items and 46,966 pieces of false content over a three-year period since January 1, 2022.

Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching revealed these figures to the Dewan Rakyat, covering the period from January 1, 2022, to October 15 this year.

She stated that MCMC submitted 3,074 applications to service providers for removing deepfake content during this timeframe.

Of these deepfake removal requests, 2,354 items representing 77% were successfully taken down.

Regarding fake content, the commission submitted 55,218 applications for removal.

A total of 46,966 fake content items, constituting 85% of applications, were removed from platforms.

These takedown actions were executed based on public complaints and platform community guidelines aligned with local laws.

Active collaboration with social media platforms and enforcement agencies continues to curb false information spread, including AI-generated content.

Teo provided this information in response to a question from Datuk Dr Suhaili Abdul Rahman regarding measures to prevent AI technology misuse that could cause public unrest and interracial tension.

The government has enacted the Online Safety Act 2025 to enhance and promote online safety in Malaysia.

This legislation regulates harmful content and outlines duties for application service providers, content application service providers, and licensed network service providers.

MCMC is currently developing subsidiary instruments under Act 866 alongside regulations and codes focused on online risk management.

Service providers will be required to prepare an online safety plan detailing their compliance with Act 866 to ensure transparency and accountability.

The commission is also exploring age and identity verification methods for online platform users.

This verification aims to ensure effective implementation on digital platforms and reduce harmful content exposure risks, particularly for children. – Bernama
