KUALA LUMPUR: Taiwan’s city of Taichung is all set to promote its famous ponkan or mandarin oranges in Malaysia, as the industry rejuvenates from the COVID-19 pandemic challenges.

Taichung City Government Agriculture Bureau Marketing and Processing Division chief, Liao Shi-Wei, said that Taichung ponkan is now available nationwide at various premises, including AEON, MBG fruit shop, Whole Foods Express and Star Grocer.

He said that Taichung’s highland climate, clean water and this year’s good weather have led to a great ponkan harvest and export.

“Those from Shingang (district) are known for their beautiful colour, juiciness and sweet firm pulp, making them some of the most sought after. Their flesh is the perfect balance of sweetness and tanginess, and the packaging has been awarded the Global GAP (Good Agricultural Practices) and ISO 22000 certification.

“These ponkan make an excellent choice for quality gifts during the Malaysian festive seasons,” he told reporters during the Taichung Ponkan in Malaysia 2023 media gathering, here today.

Liao said the media gathering in Malaysia is the first overseas agricultural product marketing for Taichung City Government this year, and the first one since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic three years ago.

He said consumers need only to look out for the mark of quality from the Taichung City Agriculture Bureau, to ensure that they are getting the safest and most delicious Taichung ponkan.

He added that through collaboration with Malaysian bakery, RT Pastry, three products made from Taichung ponkan will be introduced next month - ponkan cheesecake, pound cake and custard.–Bernama
