MACC chief Azam Baki dismisses Bloomberg report linking officials to alleged corporate mafia schemes
DENGKIL: Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki has dismissed claims linking the anti-graft body to a so-called “corporate mafia”, saying that those spreading such allegations should lodge police reports.
He was reported by an English portal as saying: “This is what I would call unverified information. You have your own ethics and standards, don’t you? If anyone wants to spread unverified claims, that is his choice. If they want to lodge a police report, they are free to do so.”
He was responding to a Bloomberg report published on Feb 12 alleging that top MACC officials were involved in schemes orchestrated by a network of business people targeting local companies for takeover.
The report described the network, dubbed a “corporate mafia”, as acquiring shares in companies, intimidating executives and forcing them out, sometimes with the involvement of MACC officers.
He was speaking after attending the Kampung Angkat Madani event at Balai Raya Kampung Sungai Buah.
Azam further told the portal that the public should not give credence to unverified claims, particularly those that could damage his reputation or that of the commission.
“I am not concerned about YouTube or similar platforms.
“If they obtain information from unverified sources, that is their responsibility.
“If anyone wishes to lodge a police report, go ahead. I am not concerned. I continue my life as usual – cycling, working on my fitness and even playing pickleball for two to three hours at a stretch. I still have the energy.
“I am not bothered by all this. Do you want to let such claims disturb you? There is no problem.”
