China’s top legislator Zhao Leji told South Korean President Lee Jae Myung that Beijing hopes for stable, long-term development of bilateral ties and deeper cooperation.
BEIJING: China’s top legislator Zhao Leji told South Korean President Lee Jae Myung on Tuesday that Beijing hopes for stable, long-term development of bilateral ties.
Zhao, China’s third highest-ranking official, said China was willing to work with South Korea to “consolidate good-neighbourly friendship” and “deepen mutually beneficial cooperation”.
He also called for stronger communication and cooperation between the two nations.
Lee is the first South Korean leader to visit Beijing in six years, seeking to improve ties after a prolonged diplomatic stand-off.
He met Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday, where both agreed on the importance of peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.
They also discussed the resumption of dialogue with North Korea.
Lee also met Chinese Premier Li Qiang on Tuesday, hailing improving ties as the “irreversible trend of the times”.
The South Korean leader is hoping to expand economic cooperation with his country’s largest trading partner.
He will visit China’s economic powerhouse of Shanghai on Wednesday.
Lee’s visit follows a US military operation in Caracas that ousted Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro.
Beijing and Pyongyang condemned the raid, which brought Maduro to New York to face narco-trafficking charges.
