Former assistant engineer charged with 146 bribery counts

A former assistant engineer at the Kerian District and Land Office faces 146 charges for accepting RM183,500 in bribes from a contractor.

IPOH: A former assistant engineer at the Kerian District and Land Office (PDT) was charged in the Sessions Court here today with 146 counts of accepting bribes amounting to RM183,500 three years ago.

Saifol Nizam Mat Zin, 48, pleaded not guilty to all charges when they were read before Judge Meor Sulaiman Ahmad Tarmizi.

According to the charges, Saifol Nizam, who was serving as an assistant engineer in the District Development Division of PDT Kerian at the time, allegedly received sums ranging from RM500 to RM1,500 from a contractor known to have dealings connected to his official duties.

The offences were allegedly committed at various locations in the Kerian district between Jan 3, 2022 and Oct 11, 2023.

He was charged under Section 165 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of two years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both upon conviction.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) prosecuting officer Sharul Azuan Ghazali and deputy public prosecutor Maziyah Mansor prosecuted, while the accused was represented by lawyer P. Ravee.

The court granted bail of RM50,000 with one surety covering all charges. Saifol Nizam was also ordered to report monthly to the MACC office in Ipoh, surrender his passport to the court and avoid any contact with prosecution witnesses.

The case has been fixed for mention and document submission on Aug 26.
