MA president pushes for age limit rule to align with World Athletics

Malaysia Athletics president urges debate on limiting council members to below 70 to align constitution with World Athletics at AGM.

MALAYSIA Athletics (MA) president Datuk Karim Ibrahim has called for a motion to limit the age of council members to below 70 to be debated and approved at the governing body’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) this Saturday.

In a statement today, he said the move was important to continue efforts to align the MA Constitution with that of World Athletics (WA).

Karim said he had taken leave from his duties as MA president on May 6 in the hope that the MA Council would amend several constitutional clauses to bring them in line with the World Athletics Constitution.

According to him, the proposed amendments include limiting the age of office bearers among MA council members to 70 and introducing a quota for women’s representation in the MA Council to be adopted at the MA Elective General Meeting in 2028.

He said that if those conditions were met, he would step down as MA president after the constitutional amendments had been approved by the Sports Commissioner’s Office (PJS) and World Athletics.

However, Karim expressed disappointment after learning that the MA Council had rejected the proposed amendment to restrict office bearers to individuals below the age of 70.

“If this clause is amended, I myself would automatically be ineligible to contest for any position in MA in the next term.

“I hereby urge that the motion to limit the age of council members to below 70 be debated and approved at the MA Annual General Meeting this Saturday, so that my aspiration to align the MA Constitution with World Athletics policies can be realised,” he said.
