Shahriffuddin returns to winning ways At PGM Penang Closed Championship

Veteran golfer Shahriffuddin Ariffin produced another composed display to clinch the PGM Penang Closed Championship title, while Liyana Durisic rallied from three shots behind to claim the women’s crown.

PENANG, June 25 — Shahriffuddin Ariffin returned to the winner’s circle after carding a superb final-round six-under-par 66 to capture the PGM Penang Closed Championship at Bukit Jawi Golf Resort.

The golfer, affectionately known as “Dino”, finished on 17-under-par 199 after rounds of 69, 64 and 66 to secure the title and the RM31,500 winner’s cheque.

Shahriffuddin fired seven birdies against a lone bogey on the second hole to finish three shots clear of runners-up Edven Ying and Amir Nazrin, who tied for second on 14-under.

“I played well today but Amir was quite close to me on most of the holes, whereas Ervin wasn’t sinking the putts today,” said Shahriffuddin.

“My schedule will be tight over the next few weeks as I’m heading to Taiwan.”

Edven mounted a late charge with a six-under 66 but was unable to catch the champion.

In the Ladies Championship, Liyana Durisic overturned a three-shot deficit with a brilliant final-round 69 to finish on three-over-par 219 and lift the title by two strokes.

Liyana said a change in mindset made the difference after a difficult second round.

“I was setting too much emphasis on technicality yesterday, but I changed it today to be more relaxed and that helped me to win,” she said.

Zulaikah Nasser finished runner-up on five-over-par 221, while Pang Hee Jie placed third on 225.

The PGM Penang Closed Championship featured a total prize purse of RM180,000, while the Ladies Championship offered RM30,000. The tournament was hosted by Bukit Jawi Golf Resort and played on the Hill Course (par 72).
