Anwar greenlights new Indian consulate in Kota Kinabalu

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim supports India’s plan for a new consulate in Sabah, a move set to deepen bilateral ties and boost economic and cultural links.

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has agreed to support India’s decision to open a new consulate in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. He conveyed this during a joint press conference with visiting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“As a sign of our good relations, I have agreed to support the decision of the Government of India to open a consulate of India in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah,” Anwar said. Both leaders stated the mission would strengthen people-to-people ties and boost economic cooperation.

The consulate is expected to enhance consular services, particularly in East Malaysia. It will facilitate closer engagement in trade, investment, tourism, education and cultural exchanges.

It will also enhance support for the Indian community and businesses operating in Sabah and the surrounding region. Modi had previously announced the plan in a post on social media platform X.

“In the times to come, an Indian consulate will also be opened in Malaysia, thus bringing our nations even closer,” he posted. According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the consulate will strengthen ongoing cooperation.

It will also expand India’s outreach to the Indian community in Malaysia. Modi arrived in Malaysia yesterday for a two-day official visit.
