The body of a 10-year-old boy swept away by strong currents in Sungai Bernam was discovered today, 300 metres from the incident site.

KUALA LUMPUR: The body of a 10-year-old boy feared drowned after being swept away by strong currents in Sungai Bernam, Kampung Sungai Nilam here yesterday, was found today.

Selangor Zone 6 chief senior fire superintendent II Mustakim Rimon said the body of Muhamad Aakif Imran Asrul Nizam was discovered at 4.36 pm, about 300 metres from where he was reported to have fallen into the river.

“The Water Rescue Team (PPDA) conducted a dive in the river, which is about six metres deep, before finding the victim at the riverbed. The body has been handed over to the police,” he said in a statement.

He said the search and rescue operation, which entered its second day today, involved searching the river surface within a three-kilometre radius of the incident site with assistance from several agencies, including the Slim River Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) and the K9 Detection Unit.

The operation also involved police personnel, the Ministry of Health, the Volunteer Fire Department and the Hulu Selangor District Office.

In yesterday’s incident, the fire department received an emergency call at 1.40 pm, and a team from Kuala Kubu Baharu BBP was dispatched to the incident location, with assistance from the Tanjung Malim BBP.

Hulu Selangor district police chief ACP Ibrahim Husin said initial investigations found that the victim was believed to have fallen while playing on the banks of the river before being swept away by the strong current.
