Two foreigners among eight individuals charged with trafficking 247.7kg of ganja in Bukit Mertajam, facing mandatory death penalty if convicted
BUKIT MERTAJAM: Eight individuals, including two foreigners, were charged in the Magistrate’s Court here with trafficking 247.7 kilogrammes of ganja.
The accused are Muhammad Nur Nor Hisham, 30, Mohamad Hafiz Mohd Zaini, 24, Mohamad Amirul Fazrin Md Kamil, 31, Mohamad Faris Irzain Bidin, 20, Syazriel Aiman Shah Ceronnizam, 20, Muhammad Faris ‘Arimi Suzi, 26, Naveed Hussain, 37, and Nursamira Hayeemaha, 37.
They allegedly committed the offence at a house in Lorong Camelia 5 here at about 12.30 am on November 5.
All were charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code.
Upon conviction, the offence carries the mandatory death penalty or life imprisonment, along with not less than 12 strokes of the cane.
No plea was recorded as death penalty cases fall under the jurisdiction of the High Court.
Magistrate Nurul Rasyidah Mohd Akit set December 19 for mention pending the chemist’s report.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Anis Suhada Rosli appeared for the prosecution.
Mohamad Faris Irzain, Syazriel Aiman, Muhammad Faris and Nursamira were represented by counsel Ramkarpal Singh.
The remaining four accused were unrepresented. – Bernama
