Former PM Najib Razak admits in court that the RM42 million in his accounts was not a Saudi donation, contradicting his long-standing defence in the SRC civil suit.
KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak conceded in the High Court that RM42 million deposited into his accounts was not a Saudi donation.
The former prime minister made the admission under cross-examination by SRC International Sdn Bhd’s counsel, Kwan Will Sen.
“At that particular time, I thought it was a Saudi donation,” said Najib.
When asked if the truth was that the funds had nothing to do with a Saudi donation, he replied, “Based on subsequent knowledge, yes.”
Najib acknowledged that his Saudi donation defence was rejected by all levels of court in the related criminal case.
He clarified that he believed he did not get a fair trial, noting a senior judge agreed with his position during a review.
Najib also admitted the High Court in recent 1MDB verdicts found no documentary evidence to support his donation defence.
SRC International and its subsidiary Gandingan Mentari Sdn Bhd filed the civil suit against him in 2021.
The suit seeks a declaration that Najib is liable for the RM42 million and damages for various claims including misfeasance.
The hearing before Justice Datuk Raja Ahmad Mohzanuddin Shah Raja Mohzan continues.
